This campaign was initiated in 2014 and aims to reduce the amount of coffee cups that are thrown away daily on campus. UCT students and staff consume a lot of hot beverages daily, but unfortunately they are sold in cups that are not recyclable (they have a thin wax/plastic lining so that people don’t get burnt, but this makes the cups non-recyclable). We therefore raised awareness about this and encouraged students to bring their own flasks to campus. This also allowed them to get a R1 discount on their drink from most vendors on campus. GCI will continue raising awareness about this and also suggest to vendors to switch from non-recyclable cups to compostable ones, so they are less harmful to the planet.
