Questioning Culture
I’ve recently realised some terrible things about our African cultures. I’m a Xhosa young man and through out the 17 years I’ve lived I’ve noticed some things in my culture which I for one do not agree with But expected not question them. I’m taking this opportunity then to disobey my elders wherever they are by questioning the laws and beliefs of the Xhosa tribe. 1stly my argument is based on the issue of death and grieving by the women in our culture. This is what happens: When a woman looses her husband, she sits on a mattress for the whole week before the funeral and is covered with a blanket and she’s not supposed to say much nor wonder around in the house. She spends hours on this mattress – day and night- not having privacy to actually mourn for her loved one. This act has been explained to be some sort of a respect gesture shown by the “MAKOTI” (wife) to her husband and her in-laws. Some say in the olden days, because humans were conceived on the floor as there were no hospitals, then when they die the woman have to mourn sitting on the floor. I feel that women are being treated badly in this way and in several cases in has been said that women do not like going through this so called “mourning” process because they classify it as that, they are being placed on display for all people to view the pain they are going through. Times have gone and it is about time we acknowledge that the things which our fore-fathers believed in won’t necessarily work in our new and evolved society and Woman should thus start to oppose such things if they feel they are being suppressed. Not woman also but the man in society should stop being narrow minded and also intervene in issues which they think they can add their views in.
