2007 Economic And Social Council Strengthening Efforts At All Levels To Promote Pro-Poor Sustained Economic Growth
Poverty Development Trackbacks (0)The thematic discussion of the high-level segment of the 2007 Economic and Social Council session will be on "Strengthening efforts at all levels to promote pro-poor sustained economic growth, including through equitable macroeconomic policies". A new report of the Secretary-General examines different approaches to the concept of pro-poor growth and proposes policy objectives (E/2007/68).
The report of the Panel of Experts on Liberia has been issued (S/2007/340). The Panel investigates sanctions on arms, diamonds and on individuals and entities deemed a threat to regional peace, and assesses the effectiveness of those sanctions, as well as their humanitarian and socioeconomic impact. The report covers the work of the Panel to June 2007. Learn more about the Security Council 1521 Committee, the body responsible for monitoring the Liberia sanctions regime.

With the theme Development in an Ageing World, the survey discusses the opportunities and challenges of ageing populations on world economies and calls for increased and sustained attention from policymakers. It emphasizes that, while the challenges posed by rapidly ageing populations are large, they can be overcome through well-focused planning.

Member states of the Group of Eight (G8) convene annually in one of
their countries to discuss a wide variety of subjects. Growth and
responsibility are the key concepts shaping G8 negotiations under the
Germany Presidency in 2007. "The framework conditions for the global
economy, involving the largest emerging economies in the system of
global responsibility, climate protection issues and African
development will be key focuses of this year's G8 Summit in
Heiligendamm." The German government has created this site as a
clearinghouse of material on the summit. Users can find an outline of
the summit's agenda, news updates and an extensive section detailing
the history of these international forums. The "Video/Audio" section
contains webcasts of various events, including press conferences,
