Go east: African immigrants in China  Written by Kaiyu Shao

In the recent year, the attention of major media organisations was spontaneously drawn to a new phenomenon - an increasing number of African emigration is now aiming for China as their new destination, and most of these immigrants concentrate on Guangzhou, a relative economically prosperous city in south China.

Since China has always been an emigration country and has not developed a mature immigration administrative system, there is no official data on immigrants in China. However, according to Chinese media, there are now between 20,000 to 200,000 African immigrants living in Guangzhou. The Guangzhou Academy of Social Science, a research institution with governmental background, declared that the number should be around 100,000.(2)

The following paper will firstly discuss the causes for this new trend, outline the lives of African immigrants in China and, finally, describe the Chinese attitude towards the phenomenon...

African Migrants In South Africa Tell Their Stories. Youtube Channel

South Africa Migration Trackbacks (0)
African migrants in South Africa often get a bad rap. The reasons that people migrate and the situations they face as they try to build their lives in a new country are not well-understood, leading to negative misconceptions: "they're stealing our jobs", "they're all criminals", etc.

The Treasures We Bring aims to challenge those misconceptions and celebrate what migrants bring to their adopted countries. It also aims to explore the challenges of migration, as well the skills, ingenuity and resourcefulness of people who migrate.

The stories on this channel focus on "what we bring" - both the physical objects that tell the story of our journey, as well as the strengths we bring to our adopted homes.

If you like what you see here, post your own video. Tell us about the treasures you brought with you when you left home, and what they mean to you in your journey. Tell us what you bring to your new country. Just be sure to title the video "The Treasures We Bring - YourName" so we can link it to this channel.

The Treasures We Bring is a project of CMFD (Community Media for Development) Productions. The original story workshop was held in collaboration with the African Diaspora Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Testing regimes
This website describes an AHRC-funded research project into “issues of language, migration and citizenship”. Specifically, the project aims to develop a more complete conceptual and theoretical understanding of the issues surrounding the linguistic and cultural requirements used as ‘gate-keeping’ elements in EU states in the face of increased migration and the pressure to promote social inclusion and integration. The project - a collaboration between academics in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium - involved three research workshops which took place in 2006-2007, abstracts and a report of which are available. The website also includes a detailed list of resources relevant to the subject. From: Intute.ac.uk

Managing Migration: The Global Challenge (PDF; 896 KB)
Source: Population Bulletin

The number of international migrants is at an all-time high. There were 191 million migrants in 2005, which means that 3 percent of the world’s people left their country of birth or citizenship for a year or more. The number of international migrants in industrialized countries more than doubled between 1985 and 2005, from almost 55 million to 120 million. This new Population Bulletin, written by Philip Martin and Gottfried Zürcher, reviews the migration streams of the last several decades, globally and by world region. Philip Martin is professor of agricultural economics at the University of California-Davis, chair of the University of California’s Comparative Immigration and Integration Program, and editor of Migration News, a monthly summary of migration developments. Gottfried Zürcher is director general of the International Center for Migration Policy Development in Vienna, which is supported by 30 European governments to improve migration management.
