At the opening of the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in Geneva, the Secretary-General launched the Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 (full-text, 7.94 MB). The report assesses the progress towards the MDGs and warns that, despite many successes, overall progress has been too slow for most of the targets to be met by 2015. It states that "although data are not yet available to reveal the full impact of the recent economic downturn, they point to areas where progress towards the eight goals has slowed or reversed." Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) have created some e-learning materials on the UN Millenium Development Goals. These can be found in the 'Guide to the MDGs' section, and include information on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) goals, targets and indicators; the ability to track progress through interactive maps and country profiles; and establishing the data source for any particular indicator. The site explains about the concepts, definitions, implementation and sources of data for the 48 official MDG indicators. The website also contains more information about ESDS, and the importance of the correct use of data. From Intute.ac.uk

The Global Monitoring Report 2009: A Development Emergency notes that the global financial crisis is imperiling attainment of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and creating an emergency for development. The report warns that, although the first goal of halving extreme poverty by 2015 from its 1990 level is still reachable based on current projections, risks abound. International Recruitment Of Health Personnel. WHO
Health Millenium Development Goals Trackbacks (0)The World Health Organization (WHO) recently posted for comment a Draft code of practice on the international recruitment of health personnel. The WHO announcement, reads, in part,
"The numbers of migrating health workers have significantly increased in the past decades, and patterns of migration have become more complex and have involved more countries. Health worker migration from those countries that are already experiencing a crisis in their health workforce is further weakening already fragile health systems and presents a serious impediment to achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals."

From press release:
Well-managed wildlife trade has the potential to be even more of a key development tool for the world’s poor, finds a new report by the wildlife trade monitoring network, TRAFFIC, and WWF.
Trading Nature: the contribution of wildlife trade management to sustainable livelihoods and the Millennium Development Goals shows that a key development advantage of wildlife trade is the opportunities it offers to the very poor and the level of involvement by local communities. But many of the benefits are threatened when illegal trade is allowed to flourish.
Excluding the products of the commercial timber and fisheries industries, the wildlife products covered in the report include medicines, food, clothing, ornaments, furnishings, pets, ornamental plants, zoological and botanical display, research, manufacturing and construction materials. As well as contributing to the incomes of the poor, many also contribute directly to their housing, health and other needs.
The report finds that well-managed, legal and sustainable trade can have a significant impact on all eight of the Millennium Development Goals, the globally agreed roadmap which lay out targets in development assistance and poverty reduction.
