National Democratic Institute includes a useful paper Imagining the election: a look at what citizens know and expect of Sudan’s 2010 vote
The report contains findings from focus groups with Sudanese men and women in Southern Sudan and three other regions of Sudan. These were conducted between October 20, 2008-February 6, 2009. They cover knowledge of and perceptions of the forthcoming elections in Sudan 2010.

Sudan VoteMonitor was created by the Sudan Institute for Research and Policy to monitor the conduct of the 2010 Sudanese elections. Its website provides information about the research, a blog, YouTube channel and a space for citizens to report incidents of political violence and electoral fraud during the election campaigns.

Gurtong Trust - Peace and Media Project is an independent, not-for-profit, community-based project, which seeks to promote democracy and human rights in Southern Sudan. Its website includes press releases relating to the elections.

Relationship between the UN and the African Union

 The Secretary-General recently issued a Report on the relationship between the United Nations and regional organizations, in particular the African Union, in the maintenance of international peace and security (S/2008/186). The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UN – African Union Joint Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) have issued a report on an investigation into recent attacks on four villages in West Darfur (full text, pdf, 78.6 KB). According to the OHCHR press release, the attacks left at least 115 people dead and some 30,000 displaced, and amount to violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) [took] over from the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS)... [on] 31 December 2007.

The final report of the Panel of Experts established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan has been issued (S/2007/584). The report covers the work of the panel in four substantive areas:

  • monitoring implementation of the arms embargo on Darfur;
  • monitoring implementation of targeted financial and travel-related sanctions against individuals designated by the Security Council in its resolution 1672 (2006);
  • submission of recommendations to the Security Council; and
  • provision of information on individuals who impede the peace process, commit violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, violate the arms embargo, or are responsible for offensive military overflights.

According to the report, Sudanese children continue to face grave violations of their human rights, including their recruitment and use by armed forces and groups and rape and sexual violence.
