Crazy monkey murder
Posted by Nina Vismer | 18 Apr, 2006I'm sure that by now most of you have heard about the tragic murder of crazy monkey actor Brett and his friend on saturday night.
This morning we were listening to Cape talk in the car and they discussed the incident. I found it really interesting when one of the presenters said he had been incredibly offended because the majority of they newspapers showed pictures of their naked bodies on the front page.
Another presenter she was also offended because the news clip that she watched the night before also showed these naked pictures. It make me think a little. As the presenters said, the story was shocking enough, and most of the people were already horrified by the story. Was it necessary to go to such an extreme?
The presenter also spoke a bit about the poor guys' families who have to go through such indignity, seeing the guys' bodies disrespected this way. The presenter then said that there is a line which media often crosses. He also said that there isn't actually a demand for this kind if coverage in media.
Personally i agree with all of his views. I have not seen the pictures of the bodies because the news channel i watch did not show them. Personally, I don't need to see them in order to feel the horror of what happened. i think the media needs to be careful. there are ways of making your stories entertaining without offending people.
What do you think? does media cross the line between sensation-seeking and news reporting? When is it telling the public the truth and when is it over the top?
Would the world have been as outraged over the treatment of the Abu Ghraib detainees without those horrific pictures? Would Lynndie England have been brought to trial?

I think the family would have preferred for Brett and Richard to have been respected by not having their dead bodies shown on the front cover of every newspaper from hear to the Karoo.
