7 Tools to Filter the RSS Flood

Too much information and not enough filters? Check out Mashable’s latest article, Slow Feed Movement: 7 Tools to Filter the RSS Flood, which suggests choosing from seven tools to focus the flow of information. Two which caught my eye were the Best of Friendfeed feature and TweetDeck, an Adobe Air desktop application.

Opera 9.6

http://www.opera.com/download/

Web browsers come and go, but over the years Opera has maintained quite a bit of staying power. This latest version includes new desktop widgets, integration with email and chat clients, and sophisticated drag-and-drop functionality. Opera's homepage also includes a helpful FAQ section that will answer any number of queries. This version is compatible with computers running Windows 95 and newer or Mac OS X 10.3 and newer. Facebook Tops 10 Billion Photos

October 16th, 2008

Facebook has announced that the social network has just topped 10 billion photos uploaded by members. And actually, since FB stores four images sizes for each photo uploaded, that number is more precisely in the 40 billion area. This is quite significant when compared to other top photo-sharing websites including Photobucket which hosts 6 billion photos and Flickr which stores just over 2 billion.

Facebook members view over 15 million photos every day, and at peak traffic times, over 300,000 images are viewed per second.

Download Accelerator Plus 8.7.05

http://www.speedbit.com/

The sine qua non of this program is a deep and abiding commitment to faster and more responsive download times. It certainly delivers, as it effectively splits large files into smaller pieces, along with actively searching for mirror sites along the way. Additionally, the application can also preview some media files while downloading. This latest version of Download Accelerator Plus is compatible with computers running Windows 98 and newer. Online Resources for Writers

Amherst College: Online Resources for Writers

https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/support/writingcenter/resourcesforwriters

As with many other colleges and universities, Amherst College is dedicated to helping their students become excellent writers. In order to accomplish this goal, they have created a fine set of online resources for use by their own students and members of the web-browsing public. This particular set includes a long list of resources created by staff members at Amherst and at other institutions. These resources are divided into thematic headings such as "Preparing to Write", "Thesis and Argument", "Clarity and Grace", and "Using Sources". On the left hand side of the page, users can view the same list and also learn more about the writing center at Amherst and their work. Overall, it's a fine set of resources, and one that college students in particular will find useful, especially as they approach a paper deadline. [KMG] Scout Report

Society for the preservation of Irish soda bread

Posted by Celia Walter | 11 Oct, 2008

Society for the preservation of Irish soda bread The personal website of Irish-American Ed O'Dwyer is totally dedicated to the traditional soda bread which is under increasing threat from arbitrary changes in recipes (what O'Dwyer refers to as "bread morphing"), a misunderstanding of the origins of the bread, and commercialisation of the product. A history of soda bread is accompanied by authentic recipes and a passionate explanation of how this traditional food should be prepared and served in order to retain its cultural integrity. The use of Dutch ovens for the baking process is also explained. Intute.ac.uk

I had to post this as it reminds me of my childhood. My mother was a good cook and among our treats were Irish soda bread, potato cakes and drop scones (aka griddle cakes or flap jacks). Celia
