Internet Search Engines for Kids

Posted by Celia Walter | 20 Sep, 2011
This is a nice collection of search resources designed for children. From the site itself: "Here you will find search forms for the major Internet search engines for kids.Below these are Internet search engine links, links to web guides for kids, some specialized search engine forms and specialized search engine links of interest to kids.At the bottom there are links to family friendly or general WWW filtered search engines and links to more pages like this."

It's a nice resource, although I'm not sure how up to date it is. I checked out the links and all the ones that I tried were fine except for the Encarta site, which has been gone for a long time now. Otherwise, good stuff - thanks to Hazel for finding it and alerting me to it.

Unreliability of internet child health advice

Posted by Celia Walter | 16 Apr, 2010

A team at the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust have shown that using Google to seek advice on common medical issues in children can lead to incorrect information. Paul Scullard and colleagues reported in the April issue of Archives of Disease in Childhood that Googling for information on such topics as autism and MMR vaccine, the sleeping position of a baby, what action to take with a baby producing green vomit, and breast feeding with mastitis or HIV, gave unreliable results. Of the 500 websites searched, 39% gave the correct answer, 11% were incorrect, and 49% didn’t answer the question. Government sites such as NHS Direct or NHS Choices gave uniformly accurate information. The story was also carried by BBC Health News... [more]

Children in virtual worlds: conference web site

Posted by Celia Walter | 23 Jul, 2008
'Children in Virtual Worlds' is the website of a joint conference held by the BBC, the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the University of Westminster. The one-day conference was held in May 2008, in a climate of increasing moral panic on the topic by media commentators and pressure groups. The conference proceedings are being placed online, and at mid July 2008 the following academic papers are available: 'New research on virtual worlds for children'; 'Children in virtual worlds: legal issues'; 'Researching virtual worlds: let's talk about ethics'; 'Learning from online worlds: teaching in Second Life'; 'Immersion and play in virtual and actual places'; and a report on the BBC's 'Adventure Rock' online world (formerly CBBC World). Most of these papers are in PDF form, but there is also some video from the conference. The website also contains full details of the conference programme. The papers this website contains will be useful for those researching new forms of interactive media, the changing media consumption of young childhood in the UK, and also the knowledges and attitudes about virtual worlds that young people may bring with them in the near-future when they enter higher education.
