  • Trim the beginning and/or ending of your videos
  • Add soundtracks from the AudioSwap library of tens of thousands of songs
  • Create new videos without worrying about file formats and publish them to YouTube with one click — no upload necessary

VLC Media Player 1.0.1

http://www.videolan.org/

There are a number of open-source media players out there, and VLC Media Player is definitely one of the better options. With this application, users can advance files frame-by-frame and also customize the toolbars so that the user interface is free of any other non-essential items. As one might expect, the application can play a wide variety of formats, and it can also be used to record. This version is compatible with computers running Windows 2000 and newer and Mac 10.5 and newer. [KMG]

SmarterFox 2.1.2

If you could have a Smart Fox, why not just get a SmarterFox and be done with it? This nice add-on for the Firefox browser certainly makes web-surfing a bit more appealing and visually stimulating. SmarterFox displays a sharp looking "bubble" complete with customizable search engine shortcuts when highlighting a word or phrase. SmarterFox will also offer various suggestions when users are typing and it can also be used to download various links and Flash video content. This version is compatible with computers running Windows 2000 and newer in tandem with the Firefox browser. [KMG]

LSE Information Systems and Innovation Group Video Archive

Posted by Celia Walter | 22 Sep, 2008
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has hundreds of different research units, and the Information Systems and Innovations Group recently joined with other departments to form the new Department of Management. Both academic units have sponsored a wide range of guest speakers and scholars over the years, and this website lets interested parties watch these talks at their leisure. All told, there are over twenty five talks currently available, and they include Ricky Burdett's talk on "Social Aspects of Urban Form", Leopoldina Fortunati's "Discussing the Meaning of the Mobile Phone", and Danny Quah's "Digital Goods and New Economy". Visitors can also chime in with their two cents via the weblog discussion thread that resides under each video. [KMG]

Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video

July 8th, 2008

The Center for Social Media at American University’s School of Communication presents a best practices report for making online videos within the boundaries of fair use. Building on their previous report, Recut, Reframe, Recycle, the study guides video makers through acceptable practices according to copyright law. Some of these acceptable uses include:

  • Commenting on or Critiquing of Copyrighted Material
  • Using Copyrighted Material for Illustration or Example
  • Capturing Copyrighted Material Incidentally or Accidentally
  • Reproducing, Reposting, or Quoting in Order to Memorialize, Preserve, or Rescue and Experience, An Event, or a Cultural Phenomenon
  • Copying, Reposting, and Recirculating a Work or Part of a Work for Purposes of Launching a Discussion
  • Quoting in Order to Recombine Elements to make a New Work that Depends for its Meaning on (Often Unlikely) Relationships Between the Elements

So if you’re considering making video mashups, or using copyrighted video for instructional purposes, etc. you’ll want to check out this report.
