Bill of Responsibilities

Posted by Ingrid Thomson | 20 Feb, 2008

The new bill of responsibilities is being rolled out this week to all schools.

The aim of the bill is to teach youngsters how to enforce the Bill of Rights, contained in the country's constitution, in their daily lives.

The 12 core responsibilities contained in the bill spell out exactly how they should do so.

Although all learners will be made familiar with its core values, it will only be taught formally to pupils in secondary schools, Education Minister Naledi Pandor said on Monday, according to IOL.

The National School Pledge

Posted by Ingrid Thomson | 20 Feb, 2008

"We the youth of South Africa, recognising the injustices of our past, honour those who suffered and sacrificed for justice and freedom.

"We will respect and protect the dignity of each person, and stand up for justice.

"We sincerely declare that we shall uphold the rights and values of our Constitution and promise to act in accordance with the duties and responsibilities that flow from these rights."

The National School Pledge.pdf has drawn a wide range of responses including UCT blogs.  A report on IOL says that the Pledge is not cast in stone.

There has been a call for public comment and The Government Gazette will soon carry details on how to contribute.  (Will add the link as soon as it is available)

Globalgateway is a  UK website which facilitates partnerships for schools across the world.   Free registration.

A quick trawl of the site showed a number of South African schools looking for international partnerships for specific projects.  There are literally hundreds of schools from across the world e.g. Nepal, US, Poland, Italy, Australia, South Africa, Turkey   and so on.
