There was a good start to the online conversations yesterday and apart from some bandwidth problems between Nairobi and Cape Town the Opening went very well. There are still new faces appearing in e/merge to be welcomed. A special welcome to the 18 delegates from the Limpopo Department of Education in South Africa and to several guests of the Mozambican Minister of Science and Technology.
From Day One of e/merge 2006

* In "The Challenges of eLearning in Africa" a wideranging conversation including the problems of infrastructure, educator resistance to change and the difficulties of transfering courseware across institutions.
* In "The Costs of ICT in Developing Country Systems" participants are considering issues such as total cost of ownership, donor computers, technology costs as an add on, and the sustainability of power supply for computers.
* In "From Theory to Praxis" there has been a lively discussion of disability in online learning including the need for changes in ICT policy and different kinds of software. In the discussion on globalisation Neetha Ravjee has emphasised "that we should adopt a cautious approach to the use of ICTs and not assume that that it is an "automatic" good."
* In the Cafe' there has been much sharing or beverages and moments from participants' lives. Cristina Costa has invited the delegates from Lusophone countries to a conversation in Portuguese.
* In Our Languages Charles Pfukwa tells us that "Mwauya in Shona means welcome or in some context hello".
* In "The Emerging Competencies of Online Interaction" delegates have started talking about their contexts. All still welcome to join this workshop.
