Workshops

Big Picture Forums
In "The Limits and Possibilities of eLearning in Africa" we considered the poor bandwidth in Africa and looked forward to the narrated presentation. Our colleague from University of Limpopo suggested that "there is so much more one can do with the aid of technology other than synchronous presentations that mimic lecture." In "The Challenges of eLearning in Africa" colleagues from Cape Town and Maputo remind us not to limit our concept of learning technologies to computers, but to also consider the potential of mobile technologies such cell phones and PDA’s to enhance teaching and learning. In "The Costs of ICT in Developing Country Systems" the discussion of costing models considered issues of national ICT policy and human resources as vital factors. In "From Theory to Praxis" a colleague from Durban states that courses designed to include everyone - older people, children, disabled user or students with low literacy levels - are often better for everybody. A colleague from University of Western Cape raises the fraught issue of who owns course materials and from Gaberone comes the view that "use of ICTs is not technology-led but demand-driven".
Cafe' Forums
In the Welcomes forum our online host informs us that "The menu so far, ladies and gentlemen has included pasta, dark chocolate, chili, ice cream and garlic !!!!!!! What the menu lacks is made up in the warmth of the welcomes." She also reports that the Cafe' is becoming "a "let your hair down" place. We've shared pictures, hangovers, wine, green China tea, garden views, sunshine, ages and confessions of our mistakes!" In "Our Languages" A colleague from Pakistan tells us that in Urdu AAP KAISAY HAIN? means How are You? and AAP SAY MIL KAR BOHAT KHUSHI HOWI. means Happy to meet with You.
