Afrikaans Op Televisie

A new website from the Department of Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria  called Afrikaans Op Televisie  which is based on a research project assessing the impact of Afrikaans television on the South African public sphere with special focus on identity formation.

There are two sections to the website - one aimed at the general public who have an interest in Afrikaans television and television in South Africa, while the other section is aimed at the academic community.

From the website:

The principal focus of the project is to assess the impact of Afrikaans television on the South African public sphere with specific focus on identity formation. The project consists of two phases: a pilot phase and an implementation phase. The pilot phase will evolve over a period of three years. Year 1 will run from September 2007-February 2008. Year two will run from March 2008-February 2009. In year three, the data collected and analysed in the first two years will be triangulated to ascertain the way forward for this longitudinal study.

The project aims to learn more about the ways in which Afrikaans television operates in a post-apartheid South Africa. It also wants to find out more about the ways in which people use television and how, if at all, they connect that consumption to their daily lives. As such, it will address the following questions:
 - What can we learn about South African society – and particularly Afrikaans speaking South Africans, from the vantage point of Afrikaans television?
 - How does Afrikaans television position itself with regard to nation-building and identity formation?
 - How does Afrikaans television position its audiences with regard to the above issues?
