UN Action: Statement On Sexual Violence As A Tactic Of War In Eastern DRC

In the context of this year's 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence and in the lead-up to negotiations on the mandate renewal for MONUC, UN Action has released a statement on sexual violence as a tactic of war in the renewed conflict in Eastern DRC.

This statement has been drafted in consultation with Nicola Dahrendorf, UN Action Senior Adviser and Coordinator on Sexual Violence in MONUC, and endorsed by all 12 UN Action members (DPA, DPKO, OCHA, OHCHR, UNAIDS, UNDP, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNIFEM, WFP and WHO). The Secretary-General has issued his latest report on Women and peace and security (S/2008/622). The report provides a follow-up on the full and effective implementation of resolution 1325 (2000), incorporating information on the impact of armed conflicts on women and girls in situations that are on the agenda of the Council, and also information on their protection and on the enhancement of their role in peace processes.
