Female Genital Mutilation and Obstetric Outcome: WHO collaborative prospective study in six African countries
Women who have had
female genital mutilation (FGM), often referred to as "female circumcision," are significantly more likely to experience difficulties during childbirth and their babies are more likely to die, according to a new study published by WHO (
full text). This study underscores the importance of supporting women who have undergone the procedure, and of completely eliminating the practice. Also online is a
fact sheet about FGM, which states that the number of girls and women who have been undergone FGM is estimated at between 100 and 140 million and it is estimated that each year, a further 2 million girls are at risk.
