Reading women writers and African literature. Internet Resource http://www.arts.uwa.edu.au/AFLIT/FEMEChomeEN.html Reviewed in 2006jul CHOICE.
[Revisited Apr'06] This continues to be a useful and exciting resource for those interested in women writers of Francophone Africa. Since first reviewed (CH, Sup'00, 37Sup-165) the Web master has added hundreds of new entries. Though the site is still most useful for readers of French, the modified English version continues to be helpful and the amount of information for English-speaking readers appears to have grown. A click on a name in the alphabetical list brings up a short biography/bibliography; alternatively, one can access the same information by going to Who's Who in the Family Album and clicking on a face in the collage. The listings and entries of academic and critical studies are substantial, and the site also provides overviews of the literature of individual countries, excerpts from selected works, a five-minute guided tour, and much more, all neatly packaged in a lively, easy-to-browse environment. Information is constantly updated, and new material is always appearing and identified as such. This reviewer is aware of no better single place on the Web to find out what is going on in the world of Francophone women's literature. Summing Up: Essential. All levels. -- C. Pike, University of Minnesota

Female Genital Mutilation and Obstetric Outcome: WHO collaborative prospective study in six African countries

Women who have had female genital mutilation (FGM), often referred to as "female circumcision," are significantly more likely to experience difficulties during childbirth and their babies are more likely to die, according to a new study published by WHO (full text). This study underscores the importance of supporting women who have undergone the procedure, and of completely eliminating the practice. Also online is a fact sheet about FGM, which states that the number of girls and women who have been undergone FGM is estimated at between 100 and 140 million and it is estimated that each year, a further 2 million girls are at risk.
