A look at Griffin Dunne's new film...
I recently went to see Fierce People at Cinema Nouveau and was impressed with the pertinent themes, character portraits and cinematography. The movie is about a teenage boy living with his junkie mother in New York. He then is arrested whilst purchasing cocaine for his mother and she decides to kick her habit by going to stay with an old, rich man friend in the country. Their lives are transformed whilst being surrounding by wealthy socialites living a life of sex-drugs-rock ‘n roll. This movie deals with themes such as rape, dominance, ritual, excess wealth, drugs, motherhood, jealousy and adolescent sex. An interesting comparison is made by the son as he contrasts the behavior of the rich power-hungry people he is now exposed to, to the barbaric behavior of the South America tribesmen, Iskanian Indians. No doubt this film would be described by most as utterly unusual and bizarre by some, but I think the way in which it was presented was so fantasy-filled and enchanting that this film surely must fall into a higher category than most. Although the setting for the movie is notably unreal, the events and emotions experienced by the characters are applicable and can be related in some way to the lives of the majority of people. I predict the plot will be well received by audience members in South Africa and I recommend it to all movie-goers.
