I've just finished a new LibGuide. It's aimed at providing library assistance to the BUS1036 (Evidence Based Management (EBM)) students. EBM is a first year course that all the Commerce students do, although not necessarily in their first year. I'm expecting about 700 first years to register for the first sememster, and about 500 in the second.

Although it has been error checked, some errors may still remain. Please report any that you may find to Lara.Skelly@uct.ac.za.

LibGuides has changed the look and layout of the Plain Text Editor button. It used to be a small little red link at the top of the Rich Text Editor box. Now Plain Text Editor is a tab alongside the Rich Text Editor. This makes great sense to me, as I often flick between the two editors.

Unfortunately it does come with its disadvantages. One still needs to save between switching editors, which can be annoying if you want to change something quickly and see the changes. However, this is no different from before.

What bugs me most is, when working in Chrome (my preferred browser), text no longer displays in the editing box. It used to be the case that the editing tool bar occasionally disappeared, but now everything is gone. Which means that I have to work in another browser whenever I want to play on my LibGuides. And there is, as yet, no help in the Springshare Lounge.

Plain Text Editor shows the html code, which allows for 'source' editing.

With the change over to Aleph 20, the URL to link to Aleph records has also changed. The new one's are:

Linking to ISBN: http://aleph20.calico.ac.za/F/?func=find-b&find_code=ISBN&local_base=uct01&request=

Linking to ISSN: http://aleph20.calico.ac.za/F/?func=find-b&find_code=ISSN&local_base=uct01&request=

Just put the ISBN or the ISSN after the equals sign. Thanks to Caroline for providing these. 

I did notice, however, that if there is any other additional information attached to the ISBN (such as pbk.) the URL won't find the record. To get around this I suggest using the system number, which can be found in the MARC field 001. Here's the URL:

http://aleph20.calico.ac.za/F/?func=find-b&find_code=SYS&local_base=uct01&request=

Just add in the 9 or 6 digit system number after the equals sign.

Jen has suggested that you can use the document number, which is the same as the system number found in MARC field 001. Here's that URL:

http://aleph20.calico.ac.za/F/?func=direct&doc_number= 

I link to Aleph records when I add books to the Books from the Catalogue box.

Remember to add in the keyword after the equals sign.
