Chocolates for errors

Posted by Lara Skelly | 15 Mar, 2010

I have created an updated version of my Economics guide. But before I go live with it, I need some help with error checking. So I'm offering a chocolate to anyone who spots an error in it. Here are some rules:

1. Credit will be given to the first person who alerts me of the error.

2. Errors are defined by me; they could include spelling, grammar, broken links and strange font changes.

3. This chocolate offer ends 28 March 2010.

Thanks in advance for all the help :)

Linking to Unpublished Guide

Posted by Lara Skelly | 3 Feb, 2010

In most cases, when creating a link to a web page, one simply copies the URL that is displayed in the address bar. Unfortunately linking to a LibGuides page of a currently unpublished LibGuide is not that simple. The URLs change once the guide is published, and so using the unpublished URLs will result in broken links once the guide is published.

To get around this problem, there are two solutions. The first is to publish the guide privately and then use the URLs. This is probably the simplest, although for those who wish to keep their guide unpublished, it is not the best solution.

Which brings me to solution number two. In the URL of unpublished guides there is a section that reads "aecontent". Take a look at this unpublished URL to see where it would appear.

http://libguides.lib.uct.ac.za/aecontent.php?pid=93212&sid=695278

When guides are published, the 'aecontent' looses the 'ae' and becomes 'content'. So when creating links to an unpublished guide, which you still want to work once the guide is published, simply remove the 'ae' from the URL. This is how the above URL would look once you've changed it:

http://libguides.lib.uct.ac.za/content.php?pid=93212&sid=695278

You won't be able to check the links while the guide is still unpublished, but as soon as it is published the links should work perfectly.

I use links to unpublished guides when I want to link to another place within the guide I'm currently creating.

Two new LibGuides: Creating Guides and Web 2.0

Posted by Lara Skelly | 2 Feb, 2010

I've just completed two new LibGuides to assist LibGuide creators. They are currently private in order to keep students from seeing them.

The first is a guide to assist in creating a guide. There you will find information on how to make a new guide, a new box, or a new page. There is also information on how to include a picture in your LibGuide and the Aleph20 links.

Find it at: http://libguides.lib.uct.ac.za/creatinglibguides/

The second guide is all about including Web 2.0 functionality into your LibGuide. These tools include RSS feeds, chat programmes and widgets of all shapes and sizes. New tools are constantly being explored, so feel free to mail suggestions.

Find the Web 2.0 guide at: http://libguides.lib.uct.ac.za/web2point0/
