New Scholarly Open Access journals for Media and Communication Studies

There are several new scholarly Open Access journals in the field of Media and Communication Studies published by Marquette Journals. 
 
The journal titles include:-
Journal of Global Mass Communication (which has a strong South African connection as the founding editor is Arnold de Beer, while one of the co-editors is Eric Louw)   
Journal of Communication Studies
 
The first issue of the Journal of Media Law & Ethics and the International Journal of Media and Foreign Affairs is due to be published later this year. 
 
 

Global Media Journal

Global Media Journal  is a full-text scholarly ejournal published by the Global Communication Association, and support by Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, Indiana.

There are a number of geographic-specific editions - Australian, Polish, Canadian, and Mediterranean.

Intute has this to say about the Australian version:   This Australian version of the journal has an extensive Australian Advisory Board, and its own content. Articles are freely provided in PDF form. At April 2009 there are three issues online, offering articles, interviews, book reviews and some postgraduate papers. Example articles titles include: 'Source credibility and attitude change in readers of foreign news'; 'Handsome Devils: Mobile Imaginings of Youth Culture'; and 'Citizen Journalism and the Rise of Mass Self-Communication: Reporting the London Bombings', among others. The website has details of the many editors, the large Editorial Board, and the submissions process. Also available at the website is the publication 'Australian Media Monitor'. This is an elegantly designed and useful website and ejournal for researchers in media and communication studies.

'eJournalist: a refereed media journal' is a full-text ejournal, published from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

Articles (in pdf) in Vol 8 No 2 include a contribution about using radio as a tool for rural development in Limpopo.

Soundscapes.info : journal on media culture

'Soundscapes' is an online journal of media culture, freely available in full-text form. At January 2009 the journal has ten volumes online, covering the years 1998 to 2008. The journal is published from the Netherlands, and not all articles or reviews are in English. Many articles are in Dutch, and a few articles are in German. The journal aims to present texts on... "the history and social significance of media culture".

GameCulture Journal

'GameCulture Journal' is a full-text ejournal. The journal is an independent scholarly project, edited by two graduate students at the North Carolina State University and at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The intended audience is informed gamers as well as academics. At January 2009 there are four issues online, as PDF files. The journal contains articles, interviews, and book reviews. The editors publish their own academic articles in the journal, alongside texts by others. Example article titles include: 'Combat & Urban Decay: Class, Ideology, and the Legacy of the Beat 'Em Up'; 'Notes toward a History of Game Space'; 'Games and the Gallery'; and 'Scared of Science: Mad Rationality in the Video Game', among others. The website has details of the editors, and submission details. The Journal is licenced under a Creative Commons licence. There is an associated weblog.
