"The World Health Organization has released new standards for normal health and growth in children up to age five. For the first time, the standards include a body mass index for this age group; they also outline when children should hit development milestones such as sitting, standing, and walking; as well as lowered their standard for baby obesity. To determine what is considered normal, WHO used information from more than 8,000 children from eight countries, including America, who were breast-fed and received good medical care, and whose mothers did not smoke."

From press release: "More than 10 murder-suicides, almost all by gun, occur each week in the United States, according to American Roulette: Murder-Suicide in the United States, a new study by the Violence Policy Center (VPC). The study used a national news clipping service and Internet survey tools to collect incidents nationwide from January 1, 2005, through June 30, 2005, and is one of the largest and most comprehensive studies ever conducted on murder-suicide. During this six-month period, at least 591 Americans died in 264 murder-suicides, and almost all murder-suicides (92 percent) involved a firearm. Using these figures, the VPC estimates that nearly 1,200 Americans die each year in murder-suicides."

Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions for Alcohol Dependence
"Patients receiving medical management with naltrexone, CBI, or both fared better on drinking outcomes, whereas acamprosate showed no evidence of efficacy, with or without CBI. No combination produced better efficacy than naltrexone or CBI alone in the presence of medical management. Placebo pills and meeting with a health care professional had a positive effect above that of CBI during treatment. Naltrexone with medical management could be delivered in health care settings, thus serving alcohol-dependent patients who might otherwise not receive treatment."

Marital Rape: New Research and Directions

Source: [US]National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women

http://www.vawnet.org/DomesticViolence/Research/VAWnetDocs/AR_MaritalRapeRevised.pdf

"Despite the fact that marital rape receives little public and scholarly attention, it is one of the most serious forms of violence between intimates. The research to date indicates that women who are raped by their husbands are likely to experience multiple assaults and often suffer severe long-term physical and emotional consequences. Given the serious effects, there is clearly a need for those who come into contact with marital rape survivors to provide assistance and challenge the prevailing myth that rape by one’s spouse is inconsequential. Rape crisis counselors and advocates for battered women are in particularly important leadership positions to call attention to the problem of marital rape in society and to assist survivors of this form of violence. It is essential that those who work with men who rape and abuse speak out against this form of violence against women and challenge men’s sense of entitlement to have sex with their partners."

"Research shows deep and troubling evidence that significant numbers of today’s teens are not only victims of dating abuse but are accepting it as normal. More alarmingly, as teens get older and enter into serious relationships, a still greater number are exhibiting and accepting controlling, abusive, and even violent behaviors -- often by a two-to-one margin -- over younger teens who have less dating experience. Many young people face tremendous pressure to have a boyfriend, girlfriend, keep a relationship, and to have sex."
