Humanities Students "Have It Easy"?!

That time of term when everything else in a student's life gets shoved aside in order to accommodate the ridiculous load of work that's been heaved upon our desk tops. I've had a nightmarish 3 weeks, I'm sure the rest of you have as well, and when my friends and I find ourselves under stress, we tend to immerse ourselves in one of a student's favourite pastimes: ranting!
This time around though, I"ve found myself having the same debate with a number of different people, and, since the opposing party and I have never reached a satisfying conclusion, I was wondering if any of you could add some insight. The question?... Would you rather write a test, or compile an essay?
I have stubbornly defended my position: tests are so much better!
Firstly, for a test, no matter where you are, you can just sit down and concentrate on studying from your file/notes/textbook. For an essay, however, you're required to make trips to various libraries to track down books (most of which are already out), then read through those works, print and photocopy, before returning the [very thick] books after an impossibly short period of time, then sift through the research for a few measly quotes, remembering to "correctly reference", then, and only then, can you proceed to sit down and type out word no.1 out of X x 1000. What an effort!
Secondly, if you've studied for a test/exam long and hard enough, and you're keeping up with course work, in most cases you're bound to do well. An essay, on the other, is more abstract. There's nothing conclusive to study, there is no right answer, and therefore, even though you may spend days and nights slaving over a written assignment, your tutor/lecturer may still not take a liking to or appreciate your work, or, and what may be infinitely worse, you were just on completely the wrong track to begin with. Ultimately, there's just no way to ensure that you won't be getting a mediocre mark for any essay, ever.
As you can imagine, I've been explaining my argument in vain to non-essay-writing students who just don't understand, and are convinced that we humanities students have it sooo easy. Come on media people, please back me up here.
