More than just my good deed for the day
As I sit in front of this computer in the UCT library I think that it would be impossible to neglect the fact that merely by being fortunate enough to go to such a well known and widely respected university, I am extremely priviledged and lucky.
Yesterday I was however even more fortunate I believe, because I was able to visit the township of Nyanga to help with SHAWCO and help underpriviledged children to play some sport. I have to admit that this was the first time i had beed into the heart of the township and I was pleassantly surprised, although the houses are made of broken bits of wood and sheet metal and there is no garden for the children to play in, i was struck by the joy and enthusiasm of these children as well as their willingness to participate and follow the rules of the games we were playing.
It was such a great experience to see these children, many of whom have to live in what some may consider unbearable living conditions, smiling and laughing and having a great time simply by playing a fun game of cricket. It really showed me how sport can be seen as a universal language as most of the children we were playing with and teaching could not speak any english at all.It also made me feel humbled to see the gratitude with which many of the children accepted a small cup of juice and an apple. It was sad to see and to think that for many of these children, that apple might have been their supper.
It was a great experience and one which I am hoping to be part of a lot more. It definately was more than just a good deed for the day to me.

we as students at uct need to give back to the community because the fact that we are at university we have a very shelterd life and don't really hear about the living conditions of the less fortunate but you cannot disregard the fact that YOU KNOW.
