No wonder the crime rate is inaccurate!!!
I realise that a previous blog that have written addressed the issue of crime in South Africa and after being subjected to yet another incident that ended in a trip to the police station and hospital, my eyes were opened to further problems with crime and the overall state that we as South Africans find ourselves living in.
After witnessing a friend of mine trying to help a woman who was attacked by an assailant trying to rape and rob her, my perspective on crime in this country and issues that are facing this country as a whole really became clear. The woman who happened to be a British tourist and just happened to be visiting probably the prime tourist destination in the Cape, The V&A Waterfront managed to escape "unharmed" apart from the trauma of visiting our beautiful country. My friend whilst holding the attacker down, waiting for the police, was bitten on his finger and due to the ever increasing rate of HIV and AIDS, was now at risk of contracting the disease unless an anti-retroviral drug was adminstered within the hour.
Fortunately the attacker, due to the brave efforts of my friend, was captured and taken to the nearest police station. My friend and I then had the task of getting to a hospital without having a car and after eventually waiting 48 minutes for an ambulance to arrive after the phone call was made, we were on our way to the hospital. It was while in the ambulance when the paramedic told me that my friend had just been extremely lucky because he could have been stabbed or shot, and while being told at the police station that if charges were pressed that the most this man would get was probably a suspended sentence and a R500 fine, that it really hit me what a dire situation crime in South Africa really is.
After being told that we had to pay for an HIV test on the attacker and that we would not be allowed to know the reults of the test, it became clear that the police were pretty much saying that there was nothing that they could do and an attempted rapist was going to be released and be allowed to walk the streets. It opened my eyes to the fact that next time I hear in the news or on the television that the crime rate in our country is decreasing, to just remember the vast amount of cases that are simply not reported.
Kind of makes u think..... doesn't it???
