Bloody Uct Finacial Assistance People

this weekend i walked into woolies (children section..Im eighteen and fit perfectly into age 12-13...im quite tiny..lol) anyway so i see this gorgeous cream coat, price being R310..which for many is not a lot of money. So i turn to my mum and beg and plead for it. My mothers reaction was not a pretty one..ie turning red in the face, giving me the dirtiest look ever and giving my almost a ten minute lecture..from woolies all the way to the car about how money doesn’t not grow on tree's (anyone who has experienced such a lecture knows what im talking about).. Obviously i thort she was blowing my request way out of proportion. but i later learnt that my poor parents were and are going through a tough time financial. THANKS TO ME AN UCT...

later that night my father came to have a lil talk about the events of earlier that day.. you see the thing is uct is dam expensive for people who don't have that much money, like my family. i was dead set on coming to this university, not realizing at the time just how selfish a was being. my dad wanted me to go to uwc, where i would be doing law. Instead i chose uct..where i should add that i do not know for sure what im studying. so we are spending like R18 000 on Lord alone knows what. this wouldn’t be bugging me as much had my father not given me the down low on our families financial situation....

we had to take a loan out on the bond, or sumtin like that (im not 100% sure) but ya basically we had to borrow money from the bank.. Reason being is that this university did not feel that my family is in need of financial assistants. They didn’t even tell us the reason for this assumption.. Probably because we own a house which means we can take out a loan.. But the thing is: both of my parents are turning 50 very soon, my mum doesn’t work and well my dad..the poor guy works his ass off but is stuck in a dead end job. where exactly are we suppose to get the money to pay off the bank..including the cursed interest that keeps building up. i really feel that uct could of at least given some form of assistance. but no we received absolutely n-o-t-h-i-n-g!!!! am i being silly to of expected at least something?

maybe you are thinking i should stop complaining but really now i feel so guilty being here, knowing what my parents are going to be going through for the next 4 years..probably much longer to pay off their debt.. im seriously considering dropping out and going to uwc next year..the fees are way cheaper. but for now, im just going to have to close my eyes when walking past shops like yde and just be happy with what i have.. which is sometimes hard when being around people who has money coming out of the arses. Anyway I just wish UCT could of taken the time to of at least seen that we could of benefited from at least a little assistance.

  1. Hmm... welcome to a world in which you must soon learn that you are not alone. Many travel from afar with absolutely nothing but the hope of studying at UCT. From experience I came with nothing, scrapped up part-time jobs and paid it all and graduated. My parents only ever parted with R3000 towards my studies - the rest was me.

    step 1:
    Call CCS (Customer Care Solutions) - they're in Rondebosch next to Steers. You'll definitely get a job and if you don't mind chatting with strangers on the phone, for at least four hours a day. You come out with something like R26 000 per year! That's how I did my studies.

    call centres are the simplest way to go through - you financial woes and skipping your parents' wallets.

    step 2.
    Waitering. Not the best of jobs but you can easily make R5000 a month, depending on which restuarant and how many hours you put in.

    Lastly. UWC seems like a good idea, but wait until you graduate with a UCT degree. Your worth jumps up.

  3. What about getting yourself a part-time job, and contributing towards those fees and being able to buy your own clothing and incidentals? Other students do this ...

    I also hope that you are buckling down and working hard and bringing in good results ... otherwise your parents' sacrifice is wasted.
