He was ordained as the new bishop of the Anglican diocese of Grahamstown on 31 May 1987. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His inaugural sermon reveals his critique about Christian rhetoric without action: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-light-gray-color\"><em>\u201cTo fancy we can love our neighbour without concern for the laws and structures of society which debase and dehumanise is to reveal an extraordinary and often culpable insensitivity.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking action <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In April 1972, David Russell embarked on a six-month diet plan of living on R5 a month to support the plight of the community of Dimbaza. He wanted to find out for himself what it felt like to live on R5 a month. While on this diet he appealed to the government that the money given to the community was not enough to sustain them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"2396\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_20210226_0011-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32349\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_20210226_0011-1.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/?attachment_id=32349\" class=\"wp-image-32349\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2428\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_20210226_0012.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32315\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_20210226_0012.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/img_20210226_0012\/\" class=\"wp-image-32315\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\"><em>Reverend David Russell&#8217;s notes during the 1972 R5-a-day diet<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Not much came from his appeal to government. He was quoted in an article written by the Cape Times on the 16 October 1972: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><span class=\"has-inline-color has-light-gray-color\">&#8220;I am disappointed at the reaction to my monthly letters, but I am not na\u00efve about these things: I know what I am up against. In terms of politics it is difficult to expect a Minister to be swayed by this sort of stand. They appealed to fellow South Africans to offer financial and other support to the migrant workers and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1979 a charge was laid against David Russell because he was in the possession of a banned book \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/uct.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma990002547160904041&amp;context=L&amp;vid=27UCT_INST:27UCT&amp;lang=en&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;isFrbr=true&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,BIKO%20&amp;sortby=date_d&amp;facet=frbrgroupid,include,9029779601732062108&amp;offset=0\">Biko\u2019 <\/a>by Donald Woods. A year later he was imprisoned because he contravened his banning order, in defiance of the South African government at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:26% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/biko.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32353\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Not only was Biko by Donald Woods banned by the South African government, but Woods himself was banned, and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1981\/10\/29\/books\/banned-donald-woods-relishes-aparthied-fight.html#:~:text=When%20his%20friend%20Steve%20Biko,person%20aside%20from%20his%20family.\">went into exile disguising himself as a priest.<\/a><\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This banning order had been issued to him because of his involvement in the struggle against the ill-treatment of oppressed people. He received many letters of support from clergy and statesmen worldwide expressing their disappointment at how a man of God was not allowed to fulfil his duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Banned-photo-David-Russell1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32316\" width=\"303\" height=\"431\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retirement <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>David Russell retired from the priesthood in August 2003 and on 14 February 2004 was awarded the Buffalo City <em>Freedom of the City Award<\/em> in recognition of the contributions he made to the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his life, Reverend David Russell was involved in many projects aimed at elevating and alleviating the experience of the oppressed and marginalized. One of the projects was the Ithemba Lam (My Hope) Project (2012-2014), which \u201cwas initiated in order to respond to the challenges that continue to face black homosexuals within the Black townships of Cape Town.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\">[iv]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/David-Russell-Inventory.pdf\">Exploring the David Russell Papers in Special Collections<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:32% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1112\" height=\"1505\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/David-Russell-and-wife.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32356\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">David Russell's personal papers were donated by his wife, Dorothea Russell.
