They were, at best, covered in soot and, at worst, severely water damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210504_163841-mangled-shelves.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32823\" width=\"368\" height=\"441\"\/><figcaption><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Some unstable areas of the Jagger Library were inaccessible to Salvage volunteer teams for safety reasons. These were later removed by Isipani construction and salvaged by the Published Collections team<\/span>. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog is to pay tribute to all of the Special Collections staff, but particularly those in the Published Collections, who have embraced and led an enormous amount of recovery work since the last crate was removed from the Jagger Library and the last volunteer walked off. This work has taken place in various venues on and off UCT\u2019s Upper Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Journals salvaged from the fire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Libraries&#8217; Special Collections store at Meulenhof in Mowbray, a cohort of five library staff in the Published Collections team &#8211; assisted on and off,  initially by volunteers and then staff members &#8211; painstakingly spent 10 days wiping soot off the thousands of soot-covered journals that miraculously survived the fire. Many of these journals are unique to UCT Libraries and cannot be found elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"532\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/soot-cleaners.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32791\" class=\"wp-image-32791\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"693\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/slow-progress-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32793\" data-link=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/?attachment_id=32793\" class=\"wp-image-32793\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The Published team completed the slow, meticulous work of dusting soot off periodicals in ten days of tireless work.  <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final salvage of African Studies books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Library Learning Lounge on the Upper Campus, the entire Published Collections team spent weeks checking every book salvaged from the Jagger Basement area known as the interspace (approximately 11&nbsp;000 volumes). They were checked for damp and mould, ticked off on a list and packed into crates for the move to the new temporary home of Special Collections in Mowbray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Librarians-in-LLL.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32794\" width=\"519\" height=\"349\"\/><figcaption><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Busi Khangala, Thundeza Mafungwa, Bev Angus and Hajiera Davids working on the stock take in the Library Learning Lounge.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks after completion of Salvage work, I remember my team sending me urgent WhatsApp messages about books in good (relatively speaking) condition found in a skip on campus, and abandoned on the deserted floor of the Reading Room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These absolutely had to be checked, cleaned and packed for moving to the new premises. These had been removed by Isipani construction from an area in the Jagger building deemed unsafe for Library staff and volunteers to enter during the Salvage due to the severe damage caused by the fire and water. We are working on the recovery and restoration of salvaged Rare Books affected by water exposure after the fire. These are being professionally restored by <a href=\"https:\/\/dkconservators.co.za\/\">DK Conservators<\/a>, who also volunteered their time and expertise in the early, urgent phase of the Salvage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"431\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210425_134007_.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32801\" class=\"wp-image-32801\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"437\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210426_144238_.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32802\" data-link=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/?attachment_id=32802\" class=\"wp-image-32802\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"430\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210427_161049_.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32803\" data-link=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/?attachment_id=32803\" class=\"wp-image-32803\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">During the Salvage, the entrance lobby of the Kaplan Centre was converted into a temporary space for some of Special Collections&#8217; valuable and unique Rare and Antiquarian Book Collection. <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, especially after our work on the Salvage, this was a very special task. We got to handle each of these old and very special books \u2013 each one selected for its unique quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They included the smallest book I have ever seen and some of the largest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some were in the collection for their unique and beautiful binding. It was a rare opportunity for librarians to be able to handle these books and to be reminded of the treasures that previous librarians had painstakingly sourced, ordered and catalogued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The packing up of part of the Rare Book collection was for me a wonderful journey of discovery into the unique and beautiful items in the collection. So, please bear with me as I highlight some of my favourite discoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those beautiful bindings, including some wonderful modern examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/binding-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32811\" width=\"354\" height=\"439\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The smallest and the largest book below from left: Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect by Robert Burns.
