It involves planning for the future &#8211; in an environment where everything needs to be considered, from the ground up: new premises, personnel, priorities, challenges, opportunities &#8211; towards a re-imagining of preservation at UCT Libraries. And working towards a future-proof archive, UCT Libraries has formalized the development of a conservation unit at Special Collections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>T<a href=\"https:\/\/my.matterport.com\/show\/?m=nyD3QpUwkQU\">ake a virtual tour of Maitland House 2, the site of Special Collections&#8217; Recovery. <\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2022, the UCT Libraries team welcomed Tina L\u00f6hr, a paper conservator based in Cologne, back to Cape Town to assist us with ongoing recovery of our salvaged assets. <a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/books\/restoring-the-fire-ravaged-university-of-cape-town-library\">Tina had spent a week supervising the Triage Tent during the Salvage in April 2021<\/a>, and was keen to return to pick up where she had left off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"651\" height=\"853\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32991\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/7-2\/\" class=\"wp-image-32991\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1226\" height=\"840\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/10.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32994\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/10.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/10-2\/\" class=\"wp-image-32994\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color\">Jabulile Ntuli and Daniele Knoetze, interns from the University of Pretoria, worked with Tina for two weeks cleaning and restoring materials, learning and applying techniques.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit yielded some interesting and worthwhile outcomes, although it threw a stark light on the relative paucity of conservation expertise, resources and equipment in South Africa. Used to an environment more established and conducive towards conservation work, we welcomed her patience and understanding of the local climate of work, and the ongoing challenges towards equipping a space from the ground up at Maitland House II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the vision is only bolstered by these challenges, and our rationale in hosting Tina, with the support of the German Embassy in South Africa, was to begin in earnest to develop the practice of conservation not only in the fire-and-mould affected Special Collections at UCT Libraries, but in South Africa as whole.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/IMG-20220204-WA0001.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"33011\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/IMG-20220204-WA0001.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/img-20220204-wa0001\/\" class=\"wp-image-33011\"\/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color\">Before restoration<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/IMG-20220204-WA0002.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"33012\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/IMG-20220204-WA0002.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/img-20220204-wa0002\/\" class=\"wp-image-33012\"\/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color\">After restoration<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Concurrent to the establishment of conservation work at our recovery premises, the Special Collections team was fully engaged in clearing Upper Campus spaces in preparation for the new academic year. Published maps were also separated out to be processed by the African Studies team.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1315\" height=\"868\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"33002\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/18.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/18-3\/\" class=\"wp-image-33002\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"712\" height=\"859\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/21.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"33003\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/21.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/blogs.uct.ac.za\/memory\/21-3\/\" class=\"wp-image-33003\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color\">Isaac Ntabankulu has been systematically checking and labelling each individual drawing before reconciling each item back into its respective collection<\/span><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina engaged with the team about workflows to ensure that the two respective teams in Special Collections (Published and Primary) can work effectively with the conservation unit. She has provided guidance and strategic input to management about resourcing the conservation unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daad.org.za\/en\/2022\/02\/16\/paper-conservator-tina-lohr-supports-university-of-cape-town-after-dramatic-fire-in-2021\/\">recent interview with Dr Eva Thamm<\/a>, DAAD lecturer at UCT, Tina noted the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">(I) &#8230; would like to continue to be involved in this project. I notice that even small things that I do or tell my colleagues are met with gratitude &#8230; I would like to continue to accompany the project and be available to answer any questions. That\u2019s why I\u2019ll be happy to come back again if necessary.
